Earthquakes in Trinidad and Tobago: geological context

Trinidad and Tobago lies near the boundary between the Caribbean and South American plates. Faulting and crustal deformation can produce earthquakes, particularly around northern Trinidad and the adjacent offshore region.

How to interpret earthquake data

Magnitude describes an earthquake’s size and depth identifies its origin beneath the surface. Shaking felt at a particular location also depends on distance, local soil and building conditions. Recent-event records may be revised after analysis, and small or remote earthquakes might be absent. A period without reported events does not mean future earthquakes can be ruled out.

Official information and preparedness

EarthSentra provides a monitoring view, not earthquake predictions or official emergency alerts. For authoritative local advice consult the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre. During shaking, protect your head and neck and follow locally appropriate safety measures. In exposed coastal areas, strong or prolonged shaking may require immediate attention to official tsunami procedures.
