Tsunami monitoring in Taiwan: offshore earthquakes and coastal risk

Taiwan lies near the interaction of the Philippine Sea and Eurasian tectonic plates. Strong undersea earthquakes east and south of the island can generate tsunami waves, although not every earthquake causes a tsunami. The severity of any impact depends on seafloor displacement, water depth, coastal shape and local conditions.

How to interpret this monitor

Use the EarthSentra tsunami portal as geographic and historical context, not as an official evacuation alert. An earthquake or a historical tsunami entry does not establish that a warning is currently in force. For immediate decisions, follow Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration and local emergency management authorities. Coastal observations and official advisories are especially important after a major nearby offshore earthquake.

Coastal safety

If you are near the shoreline and experience strong or prolonged shaking, move promptly to higher ground or farther inland without waiting for an online update. Unusual rapid sea withdrawal or a sudden rise in water level may also be a natural warning. Avoid harbors, river mouths and beaches until officials indicate that the danger has passed; several waves may arrive over an extended period.

For regional context, consult Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System and the global tsunami monitor.
