Thirteen municipalities in Brazil’s Bahia state are under official emergency declarations following heavy rainfall, according to a October 29, 2026 update from the Bahia state government. The state civil defense agency, Sudec, added Rio Real and Ribeirão do Largo to the emergency list.
Which municipalities declared emergencies?
The affected municipalities are Eunápolis, Ilhéus, Itambé, Itanhém, Jussiape, Lajedão, Medeiros Neto, Pindobaçu, Porto Seguro, Ribeirão do Largo, Rio Real, Serrinha and Vereda. Emergency declarations do not mean each municipality experienced identical flooding or damage.
BA-413 highway remains blocked
State authorities reported that a section of BA-413 between Queimadas and Riacho da Onça remained closed after a flooded crossing was damaged following the failure of a water-retaining structure. Three of four reported state-road incidents had been cleared by the October 29 update.
Important: nationwide casualties are not Bahia fatalities
GDACS lists five deaths and 723 displaced people across an aggregated October flood event in Brazil, rated green overall. These national figures must not be represented as casualties solely in Bahia. In the separate Bahia episode for October 27–29, GDACS lists two displaced people and approximately 40 damaged homes in Arataca and Ipiaú, with no deaths assigned to that episode. Local assessments can change.
