Earthquakes in Sri Lanka: regional seismic context
Sri Lanka lies within the Indian Plate, away from its most active collision and subduction boundaries. Local earthquakes are generally less common than around major plate boundaries, but seismic waves from distant Indian Ocean events can be recorded. Coastal safety planning must also take account of tsunami risk from large offshore earthquakes elsewhere in the Indian Ocean.
Understanding earthquake magnitude and depth
On the EarthSentra monitor, magnitude indicates earthquake size, while depth describes how far beneath the surface the event originated. Neither figure alone tells you how strongly people felt it: distance, local soil conditions, construction and reporting completeness also matter. A quiet recent-events list is not a prediction that no earthquake will occur.
Data limitations and safety
This page provides recent records and geographical context, not earthquake predictions or emergency instructions in real time. Some small or remote events may be missed, revised or added after review. For a confirmed assessment and local safety advice, consult Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre and relevant official regional seismic and tsunami services. During shaking, protect your head and neck and follow locally recommended earthquake safety procedures.
For complementary global records see the USGS earthquake program, and compare with the worldwide earthquake monitor.
