Volcanoes in Mexico: activity and monitoring

Mexico’s volcanoes include Popocatépetl, Colima and Pico de Orizaba, in a region shaped by subduction and other tectonic processes. Historical eruptions and ongoing unrest must be distinguished from confirmed present activity.

Understanding the volcano records

A volcano listed in a catalog is not necessarily erupting. Geological history and monitoring information are useful context, but do not replace official bulletins. The Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI), when shown, describes an eruption’s explosivity and does not predict the next event.

Official sources and safety

Check national geological surveys, volcano observatories and civil protection services for current status and access restrictions. Hazards may include ash, gases and volcanic flows. Compare the history with the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program and the global volcano monitor.
